Consolidated Time-Entry System

Project Server and Project Web Access is rapidly becoming popular project management tool among many organizations. It provides centralize project management solution with enterprise resource management across the projects. By default, Project Server requires individual users or resource to enter the time of their own against task assigned to them on one or more projects. This is accomplished using “My Task” module in PWA. This might be difficult task for certain levels of employees within a large organization such as global manufacturing, oil/energy and service industry. They have several hundreds field workers working on several tasks on field such as rig, refinery or some remote construction site. In such cases, it is required to have a common data entry tool where their immediate supervisor can enter their time against individual’s task on a day to day basis. Why do you need separate web Application to enter time?

Project Server does not have provision to enter time for other user via PWA. And it is required to have separate Client Access License (CAL) for each business user to update their times on the project.

What does this web Application do?

A PWA user can login into the application with their current windows credentials. They can update time for himself as well as all users available under his region defined under RBS (Resource Breakdown Structure) hierarchy. Consider following example for explanation. A project Server instance has following RBS structure defined in Global Template

Scott is a Project manager and assigned with “Southern” region using above RBS. Peter, Allan, Mark and John are PWA user assigned with Texas, Florida, Louisiana and Alabama region respectively. Each user is assigned with several tasks on multiple projects. They turn-in their draft timesheet at the end of every day, which needs to be entered in the Project Server system. Due to lack of timings, multiple shifts and usability issues, Scott has been designated to enter their time in PWA for all these people. Scott is required some tool where he can browse thru all tasks for all these users and enter their time charged respectively. Scott opens up a Web Application / Time-entry web part from PWA. He enters date range as a result of which, he is displayed with tree view containing all users and respective tasks associated with them in the tree view. Scott expands individual user’s node and projects and tasks beneath it. He enters their time against individual task and saves entire time entry data for that session and updates Project Server database.
